By Benito Carbone (@_DavidCarbone)

Woodville Warriors 58 | West Adelaide Bearcats 85

In what was a tight affair for most of the match, the West Adelaide Bearcats overran the Woodville Warriors in the last quarter to record a 27-point win. Woodville have all but been eliminated from this years’ finals series after the loss, as they now find themselves 4 wins from the fifth and final seed. With a game-high 23 points and 16 rebounds, Tavarsha Scott was instrumental in keeping her side in the match. Despite her successful evasive layups in the paint, she was found lacking in support, with just Kim Porplycia’s 11 points, 9 dimes and 8 rebounds to rely on. For West Adelaide, Langenbrinck continued to bask in her fine form with 22 points and 5 steals, while Trudy Holland also accumulated her fair share, scoring 19 points.

The match started brightly, with Scott and Fejo exchanging shots from behind the arc to begin proceedings. West Adelaide took an early 7-point lead midway through the term but some skillful plays from Scott and a looping maximum from Porplycia reduced the deficit to just 2 points at quarter time. Tavarsha Scott continued her prolificacy from below the basket but not until the Bearcats managed a 9-0 run to begin 2nd quarter formalities. Some brilliant passing from Teonna Campbell to Holland resulted in a basket but a lack of awareness from the visitors allowed the margin to return to just 8 points at the main break.

The Warriors exited the tunnel a much better side than before the half and were determined to make an impact on this match. The growing atmosphere placed a stranglehold on the away side, who scored just 7 points in the third term. A basket whilst falling backwards by Scott reduced the margin to a measly 5 points, as both sides eyed a huge finals birth. Despite a quiet match, Tahlia Fejo pulled off an impressive 3-point play to attempt to bury any of Woodville chances. This seemed to have worked again, with triples from Holland and Langenbrinck putting the scores beyond doubt. The match ended 58-85, as an awesome final quarter saw off a determined Woodville outfit.

The victory helps the Bearcats jump to an unprecedented 4th position, where they will verse the out-of-form Forestville Eagles, whom they are above through just percentage. Contrastingly, it is ground zero for the Warriors, who now face a disappointing South Adelaide side to kick-start their recovery.

Round 16: Saturday, 9 July at 6:30pm
