ROUND THIRTEEN: Central District Lions v Mount Gambier Pioneers

WOMEN by Kieren Vartuli

The struggles the Lions have encountered may look to continue when they face the tough Mount Gambier Pioneers on June 2nd for the first time this season. Averaging just over 40-points between them, Mount Gambier’s dynamic scoring duo in Frost and Roberts will be putting up some big numbers against the Lions. As the Lions search for their first W of the year, the Centrals side will need to find and fix the problem that is causing their breakdowns defensively. After playing the Flames on Saturday, the Pioneers may be sluggish, and may be a touch of hope for the Lions.

The Lions will have their work cut out for them when they come up against one of the in-form teams of the competition in the Pioneers on Sunday. Keys to this game for the Lions will include their abilityto take care of the basketball, the fluidity and effectiveness of their offence and offensive layers like Riewer, and their effort in containing the extremely deadly Pioneers offence. If they can do all these things, they might be a chance at a win. However, defeating a team as broad as Mt Gambier is never easy, and the weapons the Pioneers boast, such as the Daly brothers and Barkley, are ones that can not be shut down easily. With Barkley putting up consistently huge numbers each week and the rest of the starting 5 running a very team-oriented offence, the Pioneers are going to be hard for anyone to stop. Their defence has also been outstanding too, as was seen against the Bearcats, where they recorded 7 blocks.
