Dr M S Sahu Khan is a prominent Ba lawyer by profession, however references to his profession are few and far in between the headlines of football news. Hardly surprising seeing that Dr Sahu Khan has given 38 years of service to Football to date.
Dr Sahu Khan launched his career as a football administrator in the 1960’s. Having risen through the ranks of District and National football administration, he served the Ba Football Association as an Executive Member, Chairman and President from 1966 – 1970. He moved up to the Fiji FA in 1971 and held the position of Vice President up until 1985 when he was elected President, a position he has held for the past 22 years and still holds today.
Dr Sahu Khan’s vision and foresight has seen the Fiji FA establish itself as a leading National Federation amongst Fiji’s sporting bodies. Its strength lies in a strong organizational structure from the grass roots to the national level. Dr Sahu Khan’s presidency has seen many milestones for the Fiji FA, among them Fiji being included in FIFA’s Goal Project which has resulted in a magnificent football academy in Ba which boasts 2 international standard training fields and a second FIFA Goal Project is in the process in Nadawa. Under his leadership, the Fiji FA is the proud owner of two properties, Fiji FA House on Gladstone Road and Fiji FA Headquarters on Knollys Street in Suva.
Dr Sahu Khan’s sports administration skills are also recognized at regional and international levels. He is one of a select few Fiji sports administrators who serve Oceania and International Federations. Dr Sahu Khan is the longest serving Executive Member of the Oceania Football Confederation, serving from 1985 – 2004 as an Executive Member, Chairman Legal Committee and Disciplinary Committee. He has been appointed to several FIFA Committees including its Disciplinary and Legal Committees, of which he has been a member since 1998. He served FIFA’s World Cup Committees in 2002 and again in 2006. He has also served as a Match Commissioner for FIFA matches in the Olympic Games and World Cup.
There is no doubt that Dr Sahu Khan’s dedication to football and his performance as a football administrator has brought fame and recognition to the Fiji FA and placed Fiji on the FIFA map. In 1991 he was awarded FASANOC’s ANZ Sports Administrator of the Year and in 2004 received FIFA’s Centennial Order of Merit. Also in 2004, he was made a Member of the Order of Fiji for his contribution to football in Fiji.
In recognition of his outstanding leadership and contribution to the development of football in Fiji, FASANOC is proud to confer the Fiji Olympic Order to DR M S SAHU KHAN.
