Atma Maharaj - an intelligent strategic thinker. These are the words the recipient was described as in his nomination. He very aptly uses his great intelligence and his abilities as a strategic thinker for the benefit of sport and has demonstrated this on many occasions.
For example, he was able to prepare and implement a Sponsorship and Marketing Plan for the 2003 South Pacific Games. This enabled the Organizing Committee raise the funds to run a very successful Games. Atma has brought his strategic abilities to the planning and execution phases for Team Fiji to the Pacific Games, Commonwealth Games and Olympic Games on many occasions. Team Fiji was able to properly prepare athletes and participate in the various regional and international Games with his assistance, motivation and support. He is able to identify and nurture young talented athletes, and put them through well thought out development programs. Athletes who have benefited from Atma’s involvement include Tony Philp (Sailing), Isireli Naikelikelivesi, Jone Delai, Rachael Rogers, Makelesi Bulikiobo of the sport of Athletics and young weightlifter Manueli Tulo, to name but a few. There are many more athletes and programs that have been assisted and guided by Atma’s support and love of sport.
A leader of people. Atma is able to lead by example and also by persuasion. He is able to convince people of his vision and strategic thinking and bring them along the journey with him and to achieve great results. The 2010 Oceania Weightlifting Championships held in Suva where as President of Weightlifting Fiji, Atma assembled a who’s who of leading sports administrators from no less than 12 sports to organize the best and biggest Championships ever, in only two and half months. This is one of the many examples of his involvement.
He makes things happen. Atma is able to plan and execute to the smallest detail. He is obsessed with ensuring that things are done properly and on time. He is able to use these skills as he did for the 2003 South Pacific Games, where he put together and implemented a plan to attain sponsorship in excess of $12,000,000 (twelve million dollars). This established new standards and created new industries in Sports Sponsorship, Event Management, Corporate Hospitality, Outdoor signage.
Atma has a distinguished record of service with sports organizations and with FASANOC. Athletics, Football, Netball, Sailing, Weightlifting, Swimming and countless other sports bodies have sought and received assistance from him, all on a voluntary basis. He has helped create suitable programs for the Pacific Games Council, Olympic Solidarity, Fiji Sports Council, and several National Olympic Committees and Pacific Games Associations.
Atma has been one of the most successful Fiji Coaches and Team Managers. His athletes dominated Pacific middle and long distance events for over 10 years. He has the ability of bringing out the best and then a little bit more of many athletes. He has personally influenced the performance and participation of a large number of Fiji Olympians, to date.
His undying love for Fiji. In all of his records and achievements, Atama, as he is affectionately known, has done it all for the love of his country, Fiji.
