River Training for FSM's only swimmer
16 year old Debra Daniel has been training in a river in preparation for the South Pacific Games. The only swimmer for the Federates States of Micronesia, Debra is excited to be here.
Daniel and her coach and mother Sweeter, have been traveling to the river, one hour from their home, twice a week since May in order for Daniel to train.
"I feel proud of her because she is the only one to represent our country," Daniel's mother said.
The journey from their home country to Samoa took five days. With only one airline flying out of FSM, mother and daughter, along with five wrestlers and one weightlifter, traveled via Guam, Korea and Fiji before reaching Samoa.
Daniel began swimming at a young age, and competing at age 14. At the World Championships in 2005 she swam in the 50m butterfly and 50m backstroke, and again in the World Championships in Melbourne earlier this year.
