Sherbrooke Basketball Annual General Meeting

President’s Report 2016 -2017

For Sherbrooke Basketball, the 2016-17 year has been one of significant changes and improvements that we believe will continue to assist us improve your experience within your Local Basketball Association.

In our domestic competitions we have experienced a gradual increase in numbers across all levels and age groups. The introduction of computer scoring has enabled people new to the game to come to grips with scoring responsibilities. The hard work of Pam (convenor/Secretary) and James (Junior domestic) continues to ensure we grow and develop.

During the year we conducted a member survey to obtain your feedback on the way we operate and suggestions for how we can do things better going forward. From this survey, we have already implemented some changes to our Website, game day experience, refereeing etc. and will be using it as a blueprint for moving forward.

The appointment of Jason Geritz as our Referee Advisor has made huge inroads into training, retraining and upgrading our referees and supervisors. Jason has run 2 rookie schools, a “B” grade and “A’ grade school in the past 12 months. Jason has made a significant contribution to our domestic competition as well as assisting at Friday night Junior Rep games. We are seeing the advantages of having his advanced technical knowledge and experience across all levels of our refereeing fraternity.

In Representative basketball, our Senior program experienced highs and lows. We were denied the entry of a Senior Women’s team by Big V for 2017. The women competed at MMBL level and were Runners up. Our Senior Men were allowed to compete at Div 2 level despite applying for Div 1 and having a roster that on paper would have been very competitive at that level. Our Youth Women competed at Div 2 level and our Youth Men were in the top level at State Championship.

By season’s end, our teams were challenging all of the top ranked teams and whilst not winning as many games as we would have liked at Big V level, the season was more successful than it showed on paper.

Into 2018, we have our Women’s team reinstated to Div 2 and the following coaches appointed:

Div 2 men: Ryan Rogers. Experienced Big V coach.

State Champ Youth Men: Brent Andrews (2nd season at the helm).

Div 2 women: Matt Dunstan. Well credentialed and experienced coach.

Youth League 2 women: Peter Friend. Returning after 2 seasons as Jnr Rep Coaching Director

In Junior Representative basketball we had 18 teams take to the court with 7 of those teams making finals. 3 teams made the Grand Final and each of them was successful on the day. Congratulations to all the players, parents and coaches of our successful 12/1 boys, Under 14/3 boys and 16/2 boys. Congratulations to all players who represented Sherbrooke SUNS this year and thanks to all coaches and team managers for volunteering your time.  To Nolene, thanks for keeping all things administrative in junior rep. running smoothly.

For 2018, Michael Tilley has been appointed as our Junior Representative Coaching Director. Michael brings a wealth of experience with him and has already had an impact in his short time of being involved. This was no more evident than our internal practice games held last Friday at Monbulk. What a great success the night was.

Thank you to the members of our hard working Board, especially Pamela Ball, Judy Seamer and James Farish-Carradice.  Without your continued efforts, Sherbrooke would not be growing and developing as it is.

Finally, Sherbrooke Basketball continues to serve the local Hills community, providing an opportunity to play basketball at all levels and abilities. So if you know of someone looking for a game of Ball encourage them to contact us and………………….
