Smith set to soar with the Eagles

Toowoomba's Josh Smith has endured the AFL rollercoaster over the last month, but an ironic stroke of fortune has him on top once more.

The University Cougars junior was delisted by Collingwood at the end of last month after playing just one senior fixture this year, however he received a huge boost at the AFL Draft.

Smith was taken as a rookie with pick 34 by the defending premiers West Coast Eagles, the team that prevented the Magpies from securing a fairytale flag in this year's decider.

The move will hopefully kickstart Smith's resurgence after he failed to return to the top flight after suffering a hamstring injury in the opening round against Hawthorn.

The former Downlands College student will have to work to earn his place in the side however, with the likes of Andrew Gaff, Chris Masten, Jack Redden and Luke Shuey forming a formidable midfield partnership.

Smith wasn't the only Darling Downs product nervously awaiting to hear his name on draft day, with Dalby's Tom Matthews eligible to be picked up.

Unfortunately the defender wasn't chosen by any of the 18 clubs.
