Working full time since the age of 19, Dee Butler has juggled work and basketball and has recently added becoming a mother to her list of achievements.

At the age of 16, Dee was awarded an AIS scholarship and made history by winning the first (and only) WNBL championship with an AIS team. In 2005, selected in the Australian Opals to play in the Oceania Qualifications, Dee helped the Opals defeat New Zealand to qualify for the World Championships. In the past, Dee has also played for and captained Country Victoria State Teams (16’s and 18’s).

Dee played basketball professionally in Spain and Italy, winning the Italian Championship and European Cup with Famila Schio. In 13 years in the WNBL, Dee played 251 games and was awarded with a WNBL Life Membership.

Soon after she retired from playing, Dee began coaching. She has coached Senior Women’s teams at Bulleen and now Diamond Valley, and has also coached Nunawading in the SEABL.

In 2015, she was selected as Assistant Coach of the Victoria U/20 State Women’s Team and became Head Coach in 2016. Both renditions of the team won gold. Dee also won bronze as an Assistant Coach for the Australia U/19 Gems at the World Championships in 2015 and stayed on the roster as an Assistant Coach in 2016.

Dee has recently become a new mum and is an inspirational example of how women can successfully juggle family, work and sport.
