Time Out - Vol 3

Welcome to the third edition of ‘Time Out’, where we will get the chance to catch up with Diamond Valley Referees. We were able to speak with one of our referee supervisors Nathan Mitchell, who is also one of our very own panel referees.

1. Why did you want to become a referee?
I love the game of basketball and I thought it would be a great way to meet new friends with the same interest and stay active.

2. What do you want players, coaches and parents to know about referees
While refereeing we are always under constant pressure. We know that we won't get every call perfect but we always do our best to keep the game fair and under control.

3. As a referee supervisor, what are your duties as well as organising referees?
As well as organising referees a supervisor is to help develop the skills of our current referees. During games we make an effort to check on the progress of every referee and give advice where we can. In younger age groups we are encouraging our referees to assist players in understanding the rules which will benefit both players and referees in future games.

4. Any feedback you can give to people out there looking to become a referee?
If you're interested in becoming a referee, apply for the next course! We are always looking for new referees who want to do well and it's a great way to earn some money.

5. What do you find most challenging about being a referee?
Consistency, it's the first thing that people will begin to question in your performance. I always aim to be as consistent as possible but I'm not perfect on the court and sometimes missed calls will happen.

Great work Nathan, keep up the great work and also keep up the great work in developing our younger referees. Stay tuned for the next episode of ‘Time Out’.
