Talk Around the Trap's - Vol 4
For our fourth edition of Talk Around the Trap’s, we were able to catch up with Erin Milton, the coach of the Under 14 Girls St Helena (1) team. Erin also is an assistant coach for our Diamond Valley Eagles Under 12 Girls (2) team and also having been a player herself throughout her junior career.
1. How has the team been going so far?
The team as a whole have been going well.They have really grown into their bodies and can compete with the older teams in the grade. During grading we did well to make B grade and currently sitting on top of the ladder with 5wins and 1 loss.
2. What are you looking to achieve this season?
It would be fabulous if we can keep up our consistency and stay high on the ladder to secure a finals position. Making the grand final would be the team’s number 1 goal. On an individual level for the girls, to continue improving upon their skills such as ball handling, passing and shooting.
3. What do you find most enjoyable about coaching?
Watch the look of the girls faces when they realise that the hard work they put in at training pays off and they realsie they can do things they didn’t think they could. Having coached the girls for many seasons now watching them grow up has been fun also.
4. What has been the best highlight so far with this team?
Our grand final win 2 seasons ago when we beat a team who we had lost to twice throughout the season with one being the first round of finals. To come back and be successful in the grand final was very rewarding for everyone involved.
5. What do you find most challenging about being basketball coach?
When you can see the potential in kids but they don’t believe in themselves. Teaching them the physical skills is the easier side of coaching but getting young children to believe and have confidence in themselves is the hardest part.
