Raymond Terrace Tigers & Lake Macquarie Dolphins take out Country Clubs Crown

The final country event hosted on the WPNSW calendar, the Country Clubs tournament. The best regional tournament on display to showcase was the open regional talent, WPNSW has to offer. Hosted at Lambton Swimming Pool in Newcastle, over 15 teams and 100 athletes competed for the Country Clubs title.

With the Country District tournament in December last year, these events allow all the regional teams to come together and enjoy the long weekend; an important aspect to the regional Water Polo community according to Ladies Division A Tamworth Manager Libby Magann.

“For athletes that are regionally based it is an opportunity to come together and compete against those teams who don’t have experience against the bigger National League teams and the players who play on a regular basis particularly through winter and all year round,” she said.

“I know from Tamworth we don’t have a pool to play in through winter, so it means a lot to have tournaments like these.”

The tournament catered for over six hours of pool time daily, with spectators and athletes enjoying the bright weather and onsite barbeque hosted by the local facility.

Both divisions in each gender battled it to place as high as possible in their pool matches over the course of days one and two. Day 3 consisted of finals day action where the champions of each division would be determined.

In a thrilling final, the Lake Macquarie Dolphins saw out a 9-5 victory of Dragons A Men in Division A. The Raymond Terrace Ladies snatched the Division A Ladies title in an 11-10 win over the home side Central Newcastle Ladies. Central Newcastle Blue and Woy Woy Wombats claimed Division B gold medals in the Womens’ and Mns’ competitions respectively.

Overall, another successful WPNSW State Championships tournament completed with only one more State Championships awaiting us; the ‘Col Smee’ tournament in early April.
