NEW Gippsland League To Start in July

AFL Victoria, in conjunction with the Gippsland League and the support of Gippsport, will establish a Youth Girls competition in the La Trobe Valley in July. This will be the first competition in Gippsland for teenage girls. AFL Victoria and the Gippsland League are hoping to attract sixty girls to participate in the six week. The competition will be played on Sunday mornings with each of Moe, Morwell, Traralgon, Leongatha, Drouin and Warragul all hosting one day’s play.

Youth Girls competitions are for girls aged 13-18 and emphasise fun, fitness and friendship in a family friendly environment. In 2012 there will over 1400 girls playing in 67 teams across metropolitan Melbourne, Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo, Shepparton, Warrnambool, Albury/Wodonga and the La Trobe Valley/South Gippsland. AFL Victoria hopes to expand this new Gippsland League competition in coming years to include teams from East Gippsland as well. Girls participating in the new competition will also be considered for AFL Victoria’s Youth Girls Academy program as well as the Victorian Under 18 team that competes in the AFL’s Under 18 National Championships.
