Sunbury Sets Up Western Grand Final Replay
Sunbury’s Youth Girls put in a dominant display of football to defeat Melbourne University in the first Western Youth Girls Semi Final on Saturday. After finishing third on the ladder and having not beaten Melbourne University throughout the season, Sunbury went into the game as underdogs. A round 14 loss to fifth-placed Pascoe Vale perhaps spurred Sunbury on as they came out with a renewed vigour. The first half was an arm wrestle, with neither side enjoying any ascendency in the game. After an injury to key Melbourne Uni player, Kiara Talbot-Roche, left them one down in the second half, the MUGARS appeared tired and couldn’t find the answers to the pace of Sunbury. At the end of play, Sunbury booked themselves a place in their sixth consecutive Grand Final, and set up a rematch against last year’s Premiers, St Albans, with a fifteen point victory.
The second Western Youth Girls semi final between undefeated minor Premiers, St Albans, and fourth placed Wyndham Vale, was less of a contest than the first semi final. St Albans were able to demonstrate why they are the favourites for their second consecutive premiership, with classy foot skills and an excellent attack on the ball. Wyndham Vale’s less experienced girls worked hard throughout the game, but couldn’t match the class of St Albans.
Sunbury will play in the grand final against St Albans on Saturday August 13 at 9:30am at JJ Holland Park.
