Background information:

BBNZ have revamped the WBC into 3 Tiers of competition to better serve the needs of the female basketball community.  2018 will therefore see the introduction of this new WBC (Women’s Basketball Championship) multi-tier system and the second year of the combined format of two tournaments and home/away games.

The Canterbury Region has the depth of basketball talent to enter 2 teams into the new competition. The CBA and NCBA have decided to take a collaborative approach and enter 1 team in Tier 1 (The Alloyfold Canterbury Wildcats), and 1 team in Tier 2 (Name tbc, and under the governance of NCBA).

Outlined below is the structure and teams for the 2018 WBC Tiers:

Tier One - 8 teams:

Alloyfold Canterbury Wildcats, Auckland Dream, Harbour Breeze, Otago Gold Rush, Taranaki Thunder, Tauranga City Coasters, Waikato Country Cannons, Waikato Wizards

Tier Two - 5 teams:

Capital Swish, Nelson Sparks, North Canterbury, Northland, Rotorua Lady Vols

Tier Three - 3 teams:

Manawatu, Otago, Southland

The tier two and three competitions provide a stepping stone and a gauge for teams to assess their ability, sustainability and at the same time show the basketball community that there is a pathway for women.

Below is the 2018 WBC dates:

·       WBC Tiers One and Two (Tournament 1)

Date/Venue:  May 4-6 | Tauranga | Queen Elizabeth Youth Centre

·       WBC Tier One only (Home & Away games)

·       WBC Tiers One, Two and Three (Playoffs Tournament)
