THE Western Region Football League together with the Red Onion Creative Ballarat Football Netball League have agreed to play an Under-19 match as part of the WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships.
The Under-19 clash, which is set to be played at Whitten Oval, will feature the best young players from across the two leagues in a curtain raiser to the senior match.
It will be the first time an under-18 or under-19 team will represent the WRFL since 2011.
WRFL Football Operations general manager David Newton said the Under-19 match would be a great opportunity for the rising stars of our competition to experience a higher level of football.
“The Under-19 Interleague match is a new concept for the WRFL, it is something we very much look forward to being a part of,” he said.
“We have some exciting and talented young players in our competition, so this is chance for them to showcase their skills and put on a good show.
“It is always an honour to wear the WRFL jumper and I am sure the youngsters of our competition will look forward to representing the league.
“It is also a great opportunity for our players to play on Whitten Oval.”
Red Onion Creative Ballarat Football Netball League Operations manager Scott Carey said he was looking forward to the challenge of taking on the WRFL.
“The Red Onion Creative Ballarat Football and Netball league is excited to be able to bring an Under-19 side together, made up of players from various backgrounds, some who will be playing senior football, some on TAC Cup lists and others that will simply be playing in our Under-18.5 competition,” he said.
“We’re really excited about the challenge ahead of us and can’t wait to get to Whitten Oval on the May 21 to take on a league of such high quality in the Western Region Football League.”
Mr Newton said a coach of the Under-19 team was yet to be appointed.
The match will be played Whitten Oval at 11.45am on May 21, with the seniors match expected to follow that match at 2.30pm.
