LADDER-leaders Werribee Districts pinched a 10-point win over Altona with a last quarter charge at Soldiers Reserve.
Altona came out firing in the first-quarter and were successful at moving the ball quickly from stoppages, but couldn’t capitalise, finishing the first term with just a two-point lead.
The Vikings continued their dominance in the second-quarter as they were able to keep the ball in their half of the field for most of the time, but didn’t get the reward for their effort and could only stretch the margin to 10-points at half-time.
Werribee Districts played better after the main break, but a three goal to two third quarter for the Vikings meant they led by 17-points at three-quarter-time and were cruising towards a comfortable win.
The Tigers were not prepared to give up however and kept Altona scoreless in the last quarter while kicking two early goals as they raced against the clock to snatch the win.
Altona defenders flooded the Werribee Districts forward line, but it wasn’t enough to stop Joel Russell from kicking two goals in the last five minutes to seal the 10-point win for the Tigers.
Daniel Dhal and Mading Atem were everywhere for the Tigers while Will Taylor and Matthew Wright were the standouts for Altona.
Hoppers Crossing got their season back on track with a 97-point win over Spotswood at Hogans Road Oval.
The Warriors raced off to an early lead with five unanswered goals in the first quarter and were able to limit Spotswood to just two goals for the day while they added 14 more of their own in the windy conditions.
Brayden Kitchen had a day to remember kicking eight goals for Hoppers Crossing while Lachlan Grant kicked three. Reece Johnson and Jaii Bunting were among the best for Spotswood.
Deer Park also claimed a large win, defeating Yarraville Seddon by 71-points at Yarraville Oval.
The game was competitive early as both teams kicked accurately in the first quarter, but after the break Deer Park dominated and claimed the big win.
Dylan Anderson was Deer Park’s standout on the day while Steele Aburrow kicked four goals and ruckman Rusiate Komaitai kicked three. Michael Tsaloukis finished with four goals for Yarraville Seddon.
Hoppers Crossing will be looking to carry on the momentum from their big win when they travel to Grant Reserve to play Altona in Round 13.
In the other games, Spotswood will host Deer Park at McLean Reserve and Yarraville Seddon will take on Werribee Districts at Yarraville Oval.
