NZ Maori Hockey Tournament was held in Gisbrone over the long weekend. With only one tane team and one wahine team from each rohe in attendance at this tournament - it was going to be a hard fought battle against the top NZ Maori teams.
Tai Tokerau Wahine certainly "rocked the waka" with their flamoboyant and very speedy team they were proving to be more than a headache for the other teams. Winning two games and a draw meant they were placed second in their pool only by goal differences. They then played a very strong Tamaki Makauri (Auckland) wahine team which had a lot of experience & consisting of four NHL players versus the youthful Tai Tokerau team. The semi finals were the best display of "speed, skill and wit" and we certainly made Tamaki work for the win. Tai Tokerau were playing off for a bronze medal and their game plan finally saw them win this game against Aotea and a deserving Bronze Medal.
Much can be said for Tai Tokerau Tane - with only one week to go players were pulling out right up to the time we left. Our strongest players unavailable for one reason or another. We managed to field a team as we had players trialling for NZ teams. For the players that did participate thank you for committing and giving it all you could, especially our two masters players and the first timers to Maori Hockey.
