National Volunteer Week

This week Australia celebrates National Volunteer Week in acknowledgement of the six million volunteers across the country who willingly donate their time and efforts throughout the year.

In the past year 1.2 million eager Queenslanders (including Northern Rivers Residents) put their hands up to assist the running of many events, clubs and other community functions.

Volunteers are the backbone of all football clubs, and without the input of their exceptional efforts community clubs would not be able to function.

Our volunteers make an enormous difference to the community because they make participation in sport possible, and as if this weren’t enough they also create quality, family-friendly environments in the sporting community.

Volunteers benefit personally by making great friends, creating new networks and gaining new skills, and although they are unpaid, they are satisfied and rewarded with the great feeling that comes with giving the community a hand.

To celebrate National Volunteer Week, AFL Queensland are launching the 2013 Volunteer and Coach award, the first ever online volunteer and coaching nomination process making it easy and accessible for volunteers to be nominated.

Clubs and volunteers can nominate special volunteers at any time of the year to ensure that they have the opportunity to recognise those who deserve it.

Nominations for the 2013 awards close Friday 26th July 2013, and regional level winners are recognised at league level end-of-season functions. These winners also automatically become state level nominations.

The AFL Queensland State Volunteer and Coaching Awards Dinner is a highly prestigious event held in September, where all state level awards are presented.

The most prestigious award, AFL Queensland Volunteer of the Year, receives a once in a lifetime experience including 2 tickets to the 2013 AFL Grand Final with all flights and accommodation included and the opportunity to walk in the AFL Grand Final Parade which attracts 100 000 fans each year.

Comment Guidelines: The SportsTG Network is made up of players, families and passionate sports followers like you who have a strong opinion about sport. That's great - we want you to have your say and share your thoughts with the world. However, we have a few rules that you must follow to keep it fun for all. Please don't be rude, abusive, swear or vilify others. Apart from some pretty serious sport sanctions, we also can ban you and report you if things get out of hand. So play fair and have fun, and thanks for your contribution.
