Referee Respect Round

By Matt Hughes (NRL Vic Media)

This weekend is Referee Respect Round for all NRL Victoria competitions. Referees are an integral part of our game that don’t always get the recognition and respect that they deserve. The round is about showing appreciation for the officials, who without our rugby league competitions wouldn’t go ahead.

NRL Victoria asks that all players shake the hands of their referees at the beginning and conclusion of their matches this weekend. We encourage spectators to only direct POSITIVE comments towards our referees and call out those who aren’t doing so. A guard of honour for referees at the end of a match would also be a fitting way to pay tribute to them. Please remember our referees are human and they do make mistakes.

This Saturday also features some mouth-watering clashes in the NRL Victoria men’s first grade competition.

At Clearwood Drive Reserve the Truganina Rabbitohs host Sunbury United Tigers at 3.15pm. The Rabbitohs are the team to beat this year and are deservedly sitting unbeaten at the top of the ladder. The Tigers meanwhile have shown glimpses of their capabilities and are in fifth spot. Last week 2018 male player of the year Alti Porter showcased his talents for the Tigers with two tries, meaning the Rabbitohs will need to lock him down to secure the win. Expect a quality game between two teams looking to play finals.

The Casey Warriors host the Waverley Panthers at Casey fields at 4.15pm. This should be an extremely tight contest between two sides sitting in sixth and seventh spot respectively. The Panthers will be confident coming off a tight win against the Roosters, however the Warriors will be fresh after having the bye last weekend.

The North West Wolves face off against the Northern Thunder at AJ Davis Reserve at 4.30pm. Another tight contest should ensue as both teams are equal on eight points. The two sides will be equally hungry for a win after they each suffered their second losses of the season last round.

In the final game of Referee Respect Round the Werribee Bears host the Altona Roosters at 5.30pm. Werribee go in as the favourites, however the Roosters will be no easy beats after only narrowly going down in their last three matches. The Bears are fresh off a strong win against the Thunder and will be keen to close the gap between them and the Rabbitohs in first spot.
