Women's & U16's Girls CAS Championships

NRL Victoria's Women's and U16's Girls State teams travel to Sydney tomorrow (Thursday) to compete at the Combined Affiliated States Championships to be held at Campbelltown Sports Ground in South West Sydney this Easter long weekend.

The 2018 Women's team will be looking to go back to back after their successful 2017 campaign in Adelaide. In the second year of the U16's Girls program, Victoria will be looking to go one better after finishing 2nd to Western Australia last year.

A Combined Affiliated States Women's team will be selected from the Championships to play at the inaugural Women's National Championships to be held in June where the CAS team will play teams from NSW and QLD. Players at those Championships will be hoping to impress the four NRL Holden Women's Premiership teams, Brisbane Broncos, St George Illawarra Dragons, Sydney Roosters and New Zealand Warriors who have been recently announced as the inaugural clubs for the 2018 season.

The Victorian Women's team will be co-captained by Truganina Rabbitohs duo Jamie Te Pania and Katrina Edwards who were both members of the successful 2017 team. The coach of the team is Arana Taepa from the Casey Warriors with his Assistant, Brian George from the Werribee Bears.

Taepa is excited by the mix of youth and experience in the 2018 team and is looking forward to the challenge of trying to go back to back;

"We have been able to keep half of last year's team as well as introducing some younger girls into the team which is exciting. We have good strength up front and have added skill and speed on the edges."

The U16's Girls team have 2 returning players from the 2017 team, Aaliyah Te Ngoungou and Arleah Hunt who make up 2 of the 5 in the leadership group. Other members in the leadership group include Hailee-Jay Ormond-Maunsell, Koreniah Finau and Merisa Laga. The team will be coached by Joanne Manuel from the Northern Thunder.

NRL Victoria Pathways & Coaching Manager, Ryan Walker says he is looking forward to seeing both the Women's and Girls in action this weekend;

"Our U16's Girls team have been working really hard, a lot are still learning the game but a good sign for the future is that 13 of the 20 players selected will be able to play again in 2019. The Women's team have put in the effort, they have been training since January, played a trial game against the Riverina in Albury and look to be in a good position heading into this weekend."
