Women's First Grade Grand Final Preview
Grand Final Preview
After finishing the season in fourth position, many would not have predicted that the Doveton Steelers would be on the cusp of a potential Women’s First Grade Premiership.
However after their upset win against Altona Roosters in the preliminary final last week, belief is high and Truganina will be cautious heading in to the winner-takes-all clash.
Truganina has had the edge over their upcoming opponents throughout the season, with dominating displays of attack complemented with strong defence. They’ve met three times during the season, with Truganina winning all comfortably.
In their first meeting at the start of the season, the Rabbitohs were able to run out 24-8 victors. Rabbitohs set up their season with this win, with six individual try-scorers giving the competition an early glimpse of their attacking firepower. For the Steelers, it was a disappointing way to start scoring only two tries.
In Round 13, it was much the same story with the power and different avenues to score being the difference maker for the Rabbitohs. They ran out 34-8 victors, and looked to extend their gap on the rest of the competition. Janetta Vaioletama was explosive, scoring a hat-trick for the victors, while Jamie Te Pania continued her conisistent season crossing the line once.
In the last game of the season, it was perfect preparation for the Steelers being in a tough position from the outset in fourth position. However, they showed their growth and rose against the Rabbitohs, attacking more efficiently and being stronger in defence.
While they did lose 28-16, Jean-Shannel Schmidt warned the Rabbitohs’ defence of what can come, scoring a hat-trick in the loss. For the Rabbitohs, they received great contributions from Jamie Te Pania and Katrina Edwards who both scored two tries each.
While Truganina may have had the advantage from the three wins over Doveton, it will all count for nothing when the teams take to the field this weekend. Doveton are coming off two strong underdog performances, and will play with nothing to lose.
Truganina have been the benchmark team all season, with strong performances from start to finish, and will be looking to conclude the season in style, and take home the Women’s First Grade Premiership.
