Round 8 First Grade Preview
By Tate Spiteri
Although this round is clearly headlined by the contest between the undefeated Casey and Werribee the other three round 8 matches will also hold significant bearing to the final makeup of the ladder.
The Doveton Steelers, who have plummeted to 8th on the ladder due to their poor early season form seemed to have turned the corner with an extremely respectable 10-point loss to Casey last weekend.
Last year Preliminary Finalists managed to score 28 points against the usually stingy Warriors defence in what was quite clearly the best performance thrown at the competitions early leaders this season.
Robert Tusani was among the scorers for the Steelers and will need to capture some of his early season form if the Steelers are to upset the Roosters this weekend.
Altona shape as the most likely team to replace Doveton in the finals this year having notched up 3 wins to this point in the season and boasting arguably the best young list in the competition.
Although, if the Roosters are to truly cement their spot in the competitions top 4 they can ill afford to drop another game to a team lower than them like they did to Sunbury before last weeks bye.
At Seabrook Reserve this weekend the Waverley Oakleigh Panthers will be out to build off their first win of the season when they lock horns with the Northern Thunder. The Thunder who started the season in a blaze of glory have slowly cooled down but were somewhat competitive last weekend in a high-scoring loss to the reigning premiers Werribee.
The Thunder, who now find themselves outside of the top 4 for the first time this season will be hoping for a big win to get themselves back inside the finals zone.
In the rounds other match Sunbury take on the struggling North West Wolves at AJ Davis Reserve. The Tigers, fresh off a bye and a big upset win over Altona will hope to keep their good momentum rolling by feasting on the competitions cellar dwellers.
Though the Wolves will not be without a hope with clear signs of improvement on display in their 8-point loss to the Panthers last week, Ethan Chatto was again a standout scoring 2 tries.
