Try fest needed for Vics to advance

By Tate Spiteri

A barn storming victory will be needed by the Victorian U18 Mal Meninga Cup team this weekend if Ash Lanfranchi’s side are to play in the finals this year.

The U18 Competition is set for an intriguing final round with seven teams still in the mix to fill the four available finals spots.

Despite losing to Victoria on the weekend the Western Mustangs along with the Norths Devils are in the box seats to secure a finals berth with just a win against lower ranked opposition required.

A single win behind the Mustangs and Devils and with byes this weekend sit the Souths Logan Magpies, Redcliffe Dolphins and CQ Capras meaning there are effectively five teams locked on 10 points.

After that sit the Victorians and their opponents for this week the Easts Tigers. Both teams will be out to put on a point-scoring onslaught, as they both require massive wins to secure an unlikely finals berth.

The massive win will need to be to the tune of 37 points to guarantee Victoria a finals berth.

The young Victorian side have showed they are capable of piling on points at times this year as evident by their massive +34 record in second halves. But it goes without saying they will need to be on for the full 70 minutes this week if they are to pull off what would be a stunning achievement.

The U20s also face an uphill, but possible battle to play finals this year as they chase a win against the Tigers this weekend.

The equation for the U20s is a bit more clear cut with the Victorians needing to defeat the Easts Tigers by nine points and hope that the Ipswich Jets can upset the Western Mustangs.

The Jets have only won one game this season, which was last week against the Tigers.

Given the Jets and Mustangs game is being played on the Saturday, the Victorians will know before kick off whether or not they can make the finals with a win against the Tigers.

The Victorian U18s will kick off at Suzuki Stadium at 12.00pm and the U20s at 3.30pm on Sunday.
