Round 1 First Grade Results

By Tate Spiteri

The Werribee Bears have started their NRL Victoria First Grade title defence in style with a convincing 32-8 win over the Waverley-Oakleigh Panthers at Fregon Reserve on Saturday.

Fellow finalists from 2016 the Casey Warriors and Doveton Steelers also ran out big winners with the Steelers hammering the North West Wolves 48-8 and the Warriors topping the Roosters 28-6.

And in the match of the round the Northern Thunder outlasted the Sunbury Tigers 28-30 at Langama Park.

All teams now have a week off for Easter before the season recommences on the 22nd of April.

Waverley are likely to find the going tough again as they again come up against a Grand Finalist from last year when they travel to Casey.

The North West Wolves and Altona Roosters will both fancy their chances when they meet at AJ Davis Reserve while the Northern Thunder will be out to get revenge on the Doveton Steelers who knocked them out of the ISC 9s Cup during the preseason.

In the other game Werribee will host the Sunbury Tigers.
