Northern tests for in form Victoria

By Tate Spiteri

The Victorian U18 Mal Meninga Cup team will face their biggest test of the season this weekend as they travel to Queensland to face the top of the table Norths Devils.

The undefeated Devils flexed their muscles last week with a thumping 68-6 win over the Central Crows and have been described by Victorian coach Ash Lanfranchi as a “quality side”.

Lanfranchi, who is optimistic about his Victorian teams finals chances has stressed the importance of a good start away from home this week.

The U18 outfit have powered home in their past two outings outscoring the CQ Capras 18-0 and the Wynnum Manly Seagulls 28-0 in second halves. But Lanfranchi has warned his side that they must start better against the quality of the Norths Devils.

“We have played well in second halves but it is more a case of us being poor in the first half, that is an issue we need to fix,” he said.

The Mal Meninga Cup season has three games remaining with the Victorians right in the thick of things sitting just 2 points behind the ladder leaders.

“Our goal is certainly to make the top four and play finals and I believe we have set ourselves up well to do that”

“We need to play well every week to do that” Lanfranchi added.

The U18s will also blood 3 new players with the Altona Roosters’ Chevan Papatua, Northern Thunder’s Teofilo Seigafo and the Sunbury Tigers’ Brandon Pritchard all named to make their debut.

This weeks trip to Queensland is also an important game for the U20 FOG’s team who need a win over the Devils to keep their finals hopes alive.

Coach Janan Billings said that while the first interstate game of the season always poses a challenge, his boys are up beat and full of excitement ahead of the roadtrip.

“Each week we are improving and the boys are really gelling together.” He added

This week matches kick off at 11.30am and 1.05pm at Bishop Park in Nundah, Queensland.
