Zev John to debut as Vics look to bounce back

By Tate Spiteri

The Victorian U18 Mal Meninga Cup and U20 FOG’s teams will look to bounce back from losses to Tweed Heads with wins against Wynnum Manly Seagulls this Saturday at Casey Fields.

The U18 Mal Meninga Cup match is shaping as a big opportunity for the Victorians given the Seagulls’ poor start to the season.

The U18 Seagulls have struggled in their opening two fixtures with heavy losses to the South Logan Magpies (40-12) and Northern Pride (28-12).

Conversely, The Seagull U20s have played in two tight matches to start their season. They have finished both sides of the close affairs with a 40-38 win in round 1 against South Logan and a 24-18 loss last week to Northern Pride.

Victorian Pathways and Coaching Manager Ryan Walker says both teams were disappointed with the manner of last weeks losses.

But the Victorians have moved on quickly and will be a big chance to open their accounts for the 2017 season this week.

“We have trained really well and are looking forward to playing at home again against Wynnum” he said

Featuring in the U20s lineup for the first time is forward Zev John.

John, who moved to Australia two years ago from Papua New Guinea played in the Altona Roosters’ U18 and first grade teams last season.

Ryan Walker said he is particularly looking forward to watching John’s debut.

“He has worked extremely hard and deserves his opportunity this weekend” he added.

The U18s match kicks off at Casey Fields at 12:40pm and the U20s at 2:10pm.
