Victoria last night finalised their teams ahead of their opening match in the FOG’s and Mal Meninga Cup competitions.

The teams for the Victorian’s opening game were announced last night at Dallas Brooks Community Primary School.

Melbourne Storm legend Robbie Kearns was in attendance to present the jerseys to the selected players and the captains were also announced.

Altona Roosters’ half back Nikau Williams and South Eastern Titans forward Jordin Leiu will lead the under 20s team while Casey Warriors halfback Jai Taepa will lead the under 18s with Tevita Ofahengaue named his vice.

Pathways and coaching manager Ryan Walker described Williams as “a strong leader who’s actions will speak louder than words” adding that he will be well complimented by co captain Jordin Leiu.

“Jordan is an excellent communicator who has really grown into the role. He just keeps on improving and he is definitely one I think will have a very good season.”

Leiu is one of 8 players included in the Victorian line ups that has been apart of the state system since under 12s.

“The fact that we have been able to keep that many guys coming through the ranks is a massive tick of approval for our pathway programs”

The players will get their first chance to lead their team this Saturday as the U20s FOG’s and U18s Mal Meninga Cup campaigns kick off with a home clash against the in form Tweed Head Seagulls at Casey Fields.

Interestingly, the match is the first of three consecutive home games for the Victorians who then finish the season with three away fixtures.

The Victorians will hope to use the home games to create some momentum and get the year off to a winning start as they look to turn Casey Fields into a fortress.

They will however have to be at their very best to topple the Seagulls.

While the Victorians were forced to add an extra week onto their long pre season due to a round one bye Tweed Heads were able to send an early message to the competition.

The Seagulls who have strong links to the Gold Coast Titans and are again expected to have Titans involved players in their under 20s squad were victorious in both their U18s and U20s games easily accounting for Ipswich Jets 26-18 and 60-18 respectively.

“They are a pretty good footy side so it’ll be a great spectacle at Casey Fields this week and for the next 3” Walker noted.

The U18s game will kick off at 11.40am and the U20s at 1.10pm.
