Grand Final Previews

Under 11 – Altona Roosters Red vs Werribee Bears

Altona Red have been the dominant team in the Under 11 competition throughout the season, dropping just one match in the process. Werribee made their way through to the Grand Final from 3rd place, beating Casey and Titans to make it to the decider. Both teams are no stranger to scoring with high scoring matches featuring the majority of the season. This looks to be no different with a high scoring affair on the cards. The last match between the two finished with Altona Red defeating Werribee 24-20.

Under 12 – Altona Roosters Red vs Waverley Oakleigh Panthers

Altona Red finished at the top of the Under 12’s ladder with 12 wins for the season and won straight through to the Grand Final by winning their Major Semi Final over Werribee Bears. Waverley Panthers finished in 4th position but have come up big in the finals series, defeating Craigieburn in their Minor Semi Final prior to a big win over Werribee to qualify for the Grand Final. The last meeting between the two teams ended with Altona Red 12-8 victors.

Under 13 – Werribee Bears vs Northern Thunder

The Under 13’s Grand Final features the top two teams from the 2016 season, with Werribee finishing on top with a 6 point buffer over second placed Northern Thunder. Werribee completed the 2016 regular season undefeated and will have Thunder trying their hardest to stop them completing the full season. The two faced each other in the Major Semi Final with Werribee 12-6 winners.

Under 14 – Sunbury Tigers vs Altona Roosters

As the regular season came to an end, Altona finished on top of the table just one point ahead of Sunbury. Both teams have been dominant over the season, culminating in the Major Semi Final where Sunbury were too good on the day in a close 26-22 victory. Altona were forced then to go to the Preliminary Final where they narrowly defeated Thunder 16-12.

Under 15 – Sunbury Tigers vs Casey Warriors

Sunbury have not tasted defeat yet in 2016 after a strong regular season prior to a solid Major Semi Final win over Casey. Sunbury have been one of the most impressive defensive sides, conceding an average of 7 points over 2016. A hugely successful first month of the season gave Casey the springboard they needed to finish top two with the outscoring their opponents 178-14 after 6 rounds. Casey are striving to be the first and only team to defeat Sunbury and in the biggest match of all. Casey were outclassed by Sunbury in both meetings this season, but with a fortunate forfeit in the Preliminary Final they qualified for the Grand Final. Both teams have had a week off and will come into this match fresh, but the question is, are Casey capable of stopping the charge of Sunbury?

Under 16 – Sunbury Tigers vs Northern Thunder

Again, this Grand Final is fought out between the top two sides in the Under 16 competition, with Sunbury taking on Northern Thunder. Both teams were only defeated once in the season, with the two also sharing a 16-16 draw in Round 1. Thunder had the edge over Sunbury in Round 10 with a 24-22 victory so when these two meet there really has not been much between them. The last meeting between the two was the Major Semi Final where again it was a close match, Sunbury victorious 24-20.

Under 18 – South Eastern Titans vs Altona Roosters

South Eastern Titans finished the regular season on top of the Under 18 competition, winning 12 matches and doing it in style scoring under 30 points in just one match throughout the season. Big wins such as 88-4 over Sunshine and 70-18 over Northern Thunder have rammed home the attacking quality that Titans have. Altona have come in to the Grand Final from 3rd position, winning their Minor Semi before being too strong for Casey Warriors in the Preliminary Final. Dropping just one game since Round 8 has Altona coming into the decider in great form. The last time the two met, Titans were big winners in Round 12 with a 41-16 win.

Girl’s Tag – Altona Roosters Blue vs Northern Thunder

An undefeated Altona Blue have been utterly dominant in 2016, beating all opposition and in all bar 2 of their matches have kept their opponents to 6 points or less. Thunder are looking to buck that trend and take Altona down. Thunder have only dropped the one regular season game themselves in 2016, a 24-16 loss to Altona in Round 5. That competitive showing indicates that Thunder are a chance to defeat Altona but it will need a monster effort to come away champions. The last time Altona Blue and Thunder clashed was the Major Semi Final where Altona Blue were 14-4 victors.

Women’s Tag – Doveton Steelers vs Northern Thunder

Doveton come into the Grand Final without conceding a point since Round 8. In an extremely impressive season for Doveton, the Steelers just simply haven’t let their opposition score a try since the 4th June.  The last team to score a try against Doveton was the Northern Thunder. Thunder come into the Grand Final from 4th position on the ladder after defeating both Waverley Panthers and Werribee Bears in the finals series. The two sides went one win apiece against the other in the regular season with Thunder winning 10-8 in their victory before Doveton came away 17-0 winners  in the most recent clash between the two.

Women’s Tackle – Casey Warriors vs Doveton/Northern

Both Casey Warriors and Doveton/Northern have been the two teams to beat in the Women’s Tackle competition this season, with Doveton/Northern finishing one game ahead of Casey at the end of the regular season there was a huge 12 point gap to 3rd placed Werribee Bears. The two were seemingly the grand finalists and it has worked out to be as they have both navigated the finals series with success. The regular season saw both teams sharing a 2-2 head to head record with the last meeting between the two being the Major Semi Final where Casey were victorious in a 14-4 win.

Second Division – Werribee Bears vs Doveton Steelers

The Second Division title will be fought out between Werribee Bears and Doveton Steelers where Werribee come into the Grand Final finishing 1st on the Second Division ladder to meet 3rd placed Doveton Steelers. Werribee won through to the Grand Final after beating Northern Thunder in the Major Semi Final whilst Doveton beat Casey Warriors in the Minor Semi Final before defeating Northern Thunder in the Preliminary Final. The one and only clash between the two sides in 2016 was split with a point each in a 24-24 draw in Round 6. Werribee have been the best in the competition all season but Doveton are a form team and will be tough to beat.
