RAY ERTL MEMORIAL CUP

North West Wolves versus Doveton Steelers First Grade Round 4 Preview

By Savannah Tafau-Levy

North West Wolves will take on Doveton Steelers at home this Saturday for the Raymond Ertl Memorial Cup.

Raymond Ertl was a member of both clubs starting at Doveton Steelers then to the Wolves in 2014.

North West Wolves currently holds the cup after a 52-18 win against the Steelers in 2015. This Saturday will only be the second of this annual match.

The Wolves are currently re-building their club after losing a couple of key players, coaches and a change in presidency from last year with Brad Middleton stepping in.

This year, they have a new, reconstructed team with current “NRL Victoria’s Highest points scorer” Eugene Mihaere accompanied by Brendon Sing as Coaches. Coach Eugene Mihaere has also transitioned from being a player to coach which holds different responsibilities altogether.

The Wolves have been focussing on tweaking areas for improvement and have included Under 18’s NRL Victoria Junior Representatives, Conaniah Kirisome and Tiui Misi in their line up.

Mihaere is confident they will get the job done although they have a few players missing due to being on holiday and carrying injuries.

“A big game this weekend due to the Ray Ertl Cup and playing at home, hopefully in front of a big

home crowd. It is always a physical game against Doveton no matter where we play but this one has a little bit more meaning behind it,” he said.

A player from Doveton Steelers comments, “It’s an honour being able to play this week for the Ray

Ertl Cup, win or lose! I wasn’t close to Ray back at school, but every time I’d see him he’d have the biggest smile, infectious smile”.

With mutual love and respect towards the late Raymond Ertl, the meaning of the match this weekend is a heartfelt one kicking off at 3:30pm at AJ Davis Reserve.
