2018 U20's Victoria Thunderbolts Hastings Deering Colts Preview

A new era will be launched on Saturday with the Victoria Thunderbolts playing their first game in the newly formed U20's Hastings Deering Colts competition.

This competition, along with the Jersey Flegg Cup in NSW, have replaced the NRL's NYC competition.

The U20's Thunderbolts will play 19 games in 2018, with 9 home games and 10 away games. The Thunderbolts will begin their season at home against the Western Mustangs in Round 1 this Saturday 10th March at Casey Fields, Cranbourne.

Home games will be played across 4 venues with NRL Victoria club venues - Casey Fields (Casey Warriors) and Haines Drive Reserve (Werribee Bears) being used as well as Gosch's Paddock (Melbourne Storm Training ground).

The team is also scheduled to play 2 Curtain Raisers on AAMI Park prior to Melbourne Storm home games.

The Thunderbolts will also do some travelling with 6 games in Brisbane including 2 against the 2017 Premiers Redcliffe Dolphins at Dolphin Stadium, 2 games on the Gold Coast, 1 trip to Toowoomba as well as an overnight visit to Carins to take on the Northern Pride in July.

The Victoria Thunderbolts will be coached by Ben Jack who is very excited to see his team hit the field for Round 1 this weekend;

“It’s been a long pre-season with three very physical trial games, our camp in Blackwood was very productive and beneficial, the players are now ready and raring to go, we just can’t wait to get into it.”

The Thunderbolts will see the benefit of some Melbourne Storm players dropping back for games throughout the season but Jack highlights a local Victorian junior as a player to watch in 2018;

“We’ve had a few players standout in Pre-Season but Trent Toelau’s trial matches playing across Hooker and Half have been outstanding, His ability to read the situation and understand the trends in the game is going to be very valuable to us as a playing group.”

The team will be captained by Matt Stimson, brother of current Melbourne Storm player Joe Stimson.
