2018 U18's Victoria Thunderbolts Mal Meninga Cup Preview

Round 1 of the 2018 Mal Meninga Cup begins this weekend with the Victoria Thunderbolts hosting the 2017 Mal Meninga Cup Champions the Western Mustangs from Toowoomba at Casey Fields in Cranbourne.

Victoria will begin the season with 2 home games, with Round 2 against the Tweed Heads Seagulls to be played on Gosch's Paddock in the lead up to the Melbourne Storm's first home game of the season on Saturday 17th March at AAMI Park.

Away trips against Easts Tigers prior to Easter and against Norths Devils and Redcliffe Dolphins after will provide a tough 4 week period for the young Thunderbolts.

The final game of the regular season will see the Victoria Thunderbolts take on the Burleigh Bears on Sunday 22nd April at Casey Fields.

All Mal Meninga Cup games will precede the U20's Hastings Deering Colts competition.

With 15 teams competing, 7 rounds and only a Top 4 finals series, every game of this competition is a must win game.

In 2018 the U18's Thunderbolts will be co-coached by Tony Adam & Janan Billings.

Reflecting on a big pre-season, Billings is looking forward to Round 1 this weekend;

"I think the team has gone to a new level since coming back in January, after our over night camp in Blackwood the boys learnt more about each other and have really gelled since"

The coach is also looking for big things from hooker Haele Finau from the Sunbury Tigers;

"Haele coming off the bench is a player to watch, the team seems to lift a gear when he comes on and with his sniping runs and his vision should be a standout in the Mal Meninga Competition”.
