Truganina Women Too Good for Altona

Chris Avnell

Truganina Rabbitohs took on the Altona Roosters in Round 5 of the 2017 NRL Victoria Women’s First Grade competition at Bruce Comben Reserve. The match featured the top two sides in the competition after the first 4 rounds, with both sides boasting several women selected in the Victorian Women’s Representative preliminary train on squad.

The early stages set the tone for the match with Truganina dominating, owning all the field advantage. Truganina pushed hard and relentlessly attacked the Altona line repeatedly yet the Altona defence was more than up for the task early. Constant raids on the line were met with solid defence from the hosts.

The early dominance from the Rabbitohs went unrewarded as Altona begun to wrestle their way into the match earning themselves a series of attacking sets.

Though it was Truganina who would finally strike first, when Jamie Te Pania took the ball quickly to the defensive line, gave the defence a show-and-go before bustling over to score the first points of the match.

Truganina found extra confidence from the try and regained the match dominance, though the dogged Altona defence held out until the half time break without conceding again.

The match begun to open up with free-flowing team football being on show matched by some individual brilliance from players from either side.

Te Pania showed some of her own brilliance for Truganina as her presence was felt continuously during the match, with a fast, sweeping play allowing her to draw defenders and hand off the ball to Peta Peto to cross in the corner.

The try gave Truganina a significant boost, and shortly after scoring themselves a third try, an attacking kick taking a wicked deflection off an Altona defender and bouncing its way in front of an on-running Willow Rowland who finished the try off superbly.

Despite the lion’s share of the possession and field position being held by Truganina, it was Altona who hit back with their first try of the match with a scything run from Patrice Mareikura cutting through the defensive line to put the Roosters on the board.

The threat of Altona seemed to rally Truganina, with a barrage of attacking plays allowing them to score the final three tries of the match. A run littered with steps both left and right leaving the Altona defence in a spin saw Te Aroha Hapuku score a brilliant try.

Tasia Seumanufagai and Jamie Te Pania seemed to be working in complete synchronisation, as a lovely try assist from Te Pania saw Seumanufegai crash across the line to score before Te Pania once again assisted putting Seumanufegai into a gap allowing her to outpace the defender over the final 20 metres to put the result beyond all doubt.

The final siren blew as Truganina had stretched the match out to a 30-6 victory, ensuring they continue their unbeaten start to the 2017 season.
