Table-Tennis Internationals Return to Fiji

Article from Fiji Sports Council

An electric atmosphere exists at the Vodafone Arena this morning with the Fiji Table Tennis Association set to host three major International Table Tennis Federation and Oceania sanctioned internationals in Laucala Bay, Suva this Easter weekend.

Having previously successfully hosted Oceania events in 2002, 2005 and 2012 – FTTA President Anthony Ho says to gain bidding rights again after five years is a huge accomplishment for the minor sport in Fiji.

“The ITTF Oceania Para Table Tennis Championship, the ITTF Oceania Cup and the ITTF Oceania Junior Championship has hit our shores and boy, are we excited and privileged to have the best in the Oceania region converge in Suva to compete for top honors,” says Ho.

Fiji becomes the only other country in the region apart from Australia to host an international integrated Table Tennis event which bodes well for the nations drive to prove its ability to host international sporting events.

Fiji Sports Council Chief Executive Officer Litiana Loabuka says an event of this magnitude is indeed a pleasure to host so early in the year at the Vodafone Arena - a facility which boasted hosting the most sporting internationals in a single year in 2016 with several Oceania Championships taking place, some of which, doubled up as Rio Olympic Games qualifiers.

"It's fantastic to be able to host another international this year and it being Table Tennis, we congratulate Anthony Ho and the Fiji Table Tennis Association in achieving the hosting rights for this event. It's not an easy task and through their efforts, Fiji has once again ticked all the right boxes to bring this event to Suva and further broaden the nations capability to bring in more sporting internationals."

For the first time, Fiji will also receive the honors in hosting ITTF President Thomas Weikert from Germany and ITTF Oceania President James Morris of New Zealand who will serve as observers towards Fiji’s hosting capabilities. Anthony to reconfirm this.Amended

Anthony to quote elaborating on what it means to have them visit our shores and be a present at this event.

The presence of the ITTF President and officials from Asia ie Singapore, Malaysia, Chinese Taipei from signifies the world wide interest in these events which are all qualification events for major world events including the 2017 World Para Championships, the 2017 World Cup for Men and Women, 2017 the World Junior Championships and the 2017 World Cadet Challenge .Their presence will also show the table tennis world the contribution Fiji has made to table tennis in the region and with our renowned hospitality will enable our visitors to return to their countries to promote Fiji as a popular sports tourism destination

FTTA will field a contingent of 15 ( should be 17 para) athletes for the ITTF Oceania Para Championship, 11 cadet/junior players for the ITTF Oceania Championship and three of its elite players in the ITTF Oceania Cup.
