Local Fiji favourite Sally Yee and New Caledonia’s Solenn Danger both brought a halt to the Australian dominance this morning by defeating fourth seed Marsha Guseva in the Junior Girls’ Singles.
Guseva found herself on the unlucky end of two five game matches.
Yee came from 0-2 down and raced to a five point lead in the fifth. This lead evaporated as Guseva kept her cool and levelled the match at 9-9. But Yee’s comeback came to fruition with a little help from the enthusiastic supporters, as she got over the line 11-9 in the deciding game.
Meanwhile Danger won in similar fashion taking her match against the fourth seed 11-8 in the fifth.
With both Yee and Danger with two wins and one loss, Yee took top place in the group on a head to head count back, while Danger had to make do with second position.
For the rest of the seeds it was business as usual. However Zhiying Cheng made a slight upset to expectation, continuing her team event form defeating Grace Yee to finish with top position in her group.
In the boy’s events the matches followed the script, without any upsets or surprises.
Only Victor Ma (NZL) had a scare from Ronan Aubry as the Kiwi with a big swinging forehand had to recover from a 1-2 deficit. At deuce in the fourth Aubry looked poised to notch up a big win. But the experience of Ma paid off as he went on to win in the fifth.
