League Women - Tracy Village Jets v Eagles
Thirteen might be an unlucky number for some, but for the Tracy Village Jets it made no difference as they claimed their 13th straight Grand Final win at the expense of the Eagles 76-49. The Jets have dominated league competition like no other club ever has and this record will probably never be broken. Experienced Tania Dhu (9.2ppg) led the Jets with 14 points and she had plenty of back up from Tikesa Docherty-Cole (13 @ 19.1ppg), Leah Seden (11) and Delsey Ah Wang & Danielle Totham (10 each). The Jets hit a bunch of three pointers early to give them a 22-14 first quarter lead and by half time it was 40-25. Great teamwork by the Jets who moved the ball around well keeping the Birds off -balance throughout. A disastrous third quarter by the Eagles left them floundering and a long way back from the determined Jets. The Eagles only scored 5 points in the third quarter to fall behind by 23 points (53-30) and that was far too many points to make up in the last quarter. Ieasha Friel (20.5ppg) led the Eagles with 12, but she was the lone double digit scorer for the Birds. Jaylene Boundry & Tulaha Jeffery both had 9.
For the record: Tal Yakov from Ansett led in every statistical category (avpts, ftm, tpm, pf & pts) except for one, three-pointers, and she set a new total points made record with 555.
Final Ladder: Tracy Village Jets 18-2, Ansett 14-6, Eagles 13-8, Lightning 7-12, Palmerston Power 7-11, Razzle Storm 5-13 & Uni Rebels 3-15
League Men – Uni Rebels v Essington Cannons
The Essington Cannons capped off their first season of DBA League competition with an impressive 100-81 victory over the minor premier Uni Rebels. Imports Deba George (25ppg) & Deola D’Brown Folarin (20.7ppg) combined for 68 points to deny the Rebels the silverware they sought to take home at the end of the game. The defensive effort by the Cannons kept a number of double digit Rebels well below their game averages and it made all the difference in winning the game. The Cannons took a 10 point 22-12 lead after one quarter, but by half time the Rebels had used a 27-23 run to get a bit closer at 45-39. The Cannons, however, recovered immediately after the break and went off on a 24-16 third quarter run to re-establish momentum and they held on to it to finish up first time winners of the Championship Season. George led all scorers with 35 points, Folarin hit a season high 33, Travis Ellis hit 13 and Tobiasz Hose 12. Spencer Coleman (29ppg) hit 33 for the Rebels with Tim Morris adding 18 (well below his average 29) and Marcus Ch’ng 10.
Final Ladder: Uni Rebels 19-5, Essington Cannons 18-5, Palmerston Power 15-8, Eagles 14-8, Ansett 12-9, Lightning 5-15, Razzle Storm 3-17 & Tracy Village Jets 1-20
