VHF Concludes Schools Hockey Program
This week marks the successful completion of the Vanuatu Hockey Federations’ School Hockey Program, which has seen hundreds of students from around Port Vila participate in a series of Hockey clinics run by VHF coaches and players.
Following the success of previous clinics in Mele Village and other communities the VHF has been conducting weekly hockey clinics with students from Malapoa College and more recently PVIS over the course of the school year. Students have had the opportunity to learn from some of Vanuatu’s most experienced hockey players and thanks to the Wan Smol Bag Yut Senta, experience the benefit of playing hockey on the smooth artificial turf at the Wan Smol Bag Sports Court.
Over the duration of the VHF clinics, students have learnt the basics of the game of hockey and continued developing their knowledge and skills through a variety of exercises and games. These skills were also put into practice with regular competitive games where the next generation of Vanuatu hockey players have had the opportunity to showcase their talent and flair in a new exciting sport.
The majority of students had never played hockey before with only a handful of students having previous experience in the sport. It was encouraging to see how quickly students picked up the game and how fast their skills developed as the clinics progressed, with one group of students from Malapoa managing to hold their own in a match against a team that included several players from the National Hockey Squad in the Super Sixes Youth Tournament held back in October.
Most encouraging is the high turnout in numbers the clinics have generated at the regular VHF training sessions on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. It is hoped that the VHF Schools Program will continue and be expanded to other schools next year and along with the increased participation provide the base for the launch of a new Youth Hockey League next year.
The VHF would like to thank everyone who participated in the Schools program this year, particularly the students of Malapoa and PVIS, and remind all players that the VHF and the hockey program will be shutting down over the holiday break. Regular training and games will resume in mid January, 2009. Any queries can be sent to email@example.com
