VHF Gains Membership to Oceania Hockey
exciting development for competitive sport in Vanuatu, the Vanuatu Hockey Federation
(VHF) has gained accreditation to the Oceania Hockey Federation (OHF) at the
annual general meeting held in New Zealand last month. “Membership to the OHF
is fantastic news for Vanuatu Hockey” commented VHF Secretary Roy
McNamara-Smith, “this now means that Vanuatu qualifies to play in official
matches and tournaments such as the Pacific Cup as well as gaining increased support
from regional organisations to help continue the growth of hockey in the
two successful years of competition in an unofficial regional tournament in
Suva, Fiji, the VHF now joins Australia, New Zealand, and other Pacific countries
such as Fiji, Tonga, PNG and Samoa as Oceania members.
step for the VHF will be gaining membership to the International Hockey
Federation, the FIH, when it holds its annual congress in November. “Although
we are still behind other Pacific nations in the development of the game”
continues Mr McNamara-Smith, “membership to the FIH will elevate Vanuatu hockey
to the international stage, where we will have the opportunity to gain
international experience and compete in qualification rounds for official FIH
competitions such as the World Cup, Olympic Games and Indoor World
Championships. There is a lot of hard work to be done to reach this level and
we are still developing the game in Vanuatu, however with the increase in
support that comes with affiliation to the OHF and FIH, the future of Vanuatu
hockey at in international level is very promising”.
VHF is hosting a Super Sixes Youth Hockey Tournament at the Wan Smol Bag Sports
Court this Saturday the 18th of October. Entries are still open and the
VHF is available to run introductory clinics. Should you wish to form a team
