Women’s national team bound for WLR1

The Vanuatu National Women’s Hockey Team has been announced after over 4 months of training and preparation. The final team has been narrowed down to 14 athletes, who will travel to Suva, Fiji this December to compete in the Oceania Pacific Cup/ World League round 1.

This will be the second time Vanuatu has competed in this event. In 2012, an inexperienced team proved their potential, drawing with Samoa in the Bronze Medal match. Now with 2 years of experience and the addition of some new dynamic players the team is preparing to go for Gold.

Many of the athletes have represented Vanuatu before, in either the Oceania cup in 2012, or in the Youth Olympic Qualifiers held here in Port Vila in march 2014. Their international experience will crucial for the girls in their games, especially those against fellow pacific island teams PNG and Samoa – whom the team are eager to defeat.

“Our athletes have improved dramatically” notes national coach Asthon Kealy. “the difference between the team we announced today, and the team that first represented Vanuatu in 2012 is astounding. They have come so far.”

President of the Vanuatu Hockey Federation Relvie Poilapa is excited about sending a women’s team to represent the country in the international event. “These tournaments provide the players with such a fantastic opportunity to compete on a new elite level. They provide the chance for the young women to develop on a professional and personal level, and strive towards their sporting potential”

The final team selected for the tournament includes:

Hellen Kalo (MCI), Salome Job (MCI) Mary Siro (Tagabe) Edmas Ishmael (Destination) Katy Andrew (Tanoliu) Roylani Apia (Port Vila town) Christina Kalsong (Tanoliu) Belinda Nampas (Mangaliliu) Joselyn Toara (Moso) Pricilla Michel (Tagabe) Andria Massing (Tagabe) Evelyn Kalsong (tanoliu) Danilela Kalontas (Tagabe) , Coach Peter Ronbinson (Moso) and Ashton Kealy (Perth) Manager Roslyn Nampas ( Mangaliliu)

Relvie Poilapa (Mele) and Frank Vira( Tagabe) will also be joining the team as officials for the event, representing the Oceania Hockey Federation.

The team has been training hard twice a week in preparation for the event. This would not have proved possible without the fantastic assistance of the Asco Bus, kindly donated by Asco Motors to transport the athletes to and from training.
