All Six Countries Confirm for Hockey5s

All six active Federations in the Oceania Hockey Federation have confirmed their participation in the upcoming Youth Olympics Qualifier to be held here in Port Vila, Vanuatu in March 2014.

Teams from New Zealand, Fiji, Samoa PNG and Vanuatu have confirmed they will be sending mens and womens and Australia thier mens U.18 teams to compete in the event.

This is a first for Oceania Hockey as the first event to see all active federations compete.

Teams will be competing in Port Vila in March 2014. The tournament is one of six qualifiers world wide which lead to the Youth Olympics, to be held in Nanjing China in August 2014.

Of the 6 countries competing, 4 will qualify for the most prestigious worldwide sporting event for youth under 18 years. The Vanuatu Hockey federation is confident Vanuatu has the potential to make it through and represent their country in this new sporting discipline.

“We are very excited about the prospect of this event” comments VHF President George Kalkaua. “This is by far the biggest milestone for Vanuatu Hockey, and is a great step for Vanuatu Sport in general to be named the host of an Official Olympic Event. We will be able to showcase our country and passionate sporting culture to the traveling teams, and indeed the global hockey world who will be watching with intent.”

Already the event is generating good publicity and excitement, especially now teams including Australia and New Zealand have entered.

“These two teams are amongst the best in the world in Hockey at the moment.” comments National Mens Coach Peter Robinson. “To be able to come up against such strong opponents is an exciting opportunity to learn but also show what we are made of. There are going to be thrilling games no doubt.”

The tournament will be held at Wan Smolbag’s newly redeveloped Sports field in Tagabe. Much work will be done over the coming months to ensure the venue is to an international standard.

For the Vanautu squads, 15 girls and 15 boys have been selected in the pre squad. Athletes come from a range of villages and islands including Tanoliu, Mangliuliu, Lelepa, Tagabe, Mele, MCI, Black Sands and Manples.

They have some work ahead of them to prepare to compete against some of the best in the world, but the VHF is confident they have the skill, fitness and dedication to make Vanuatu proud.
