Official Opening marks a big day for Vanuatu Sport
Wednesday morning saw the grand opening of Wan Smolbag’s new sports field. The build up to this day has been phenomenal, with a great amount of regional and international media interested in the exciting project. The field, which will be the national home to one of Vanuatu’s fastest growing sports, hockey, is one of the best in the entire Pacific region.
The Grand Opening was held to celebrate the successful completion, as well as thank funders including Aus Aid, Oxfam, the International Hockey Federation and the Oceania National Olympic Committee, and other supporters of the project.
Minister of Youth and Sport, The Hon Tonny Wright was the official opener of the new sports development, cutting the ribbon after a brief speech about the fantastic future of sport, specifically hockey in Vanuatu. The Hon Gillion William spoke on behalf of Minister of Lands, Ralph Regenvanu discussing the benefits sport has on Vanuatu communities and Netball Vanuatu made a presentation to WSB to celebration their new partnership and plans to involve more women in sport. Australian High Commissioner also talked about the fantastic opportunities sport presented, especially in engaging youth in activities around WSB including nutrition and health.
Many attended the ceremony, including members of VASANOC, Department of Youth and Sport, Vanuatu Cricket and Netball, Ausaid, NZ Aid, Oxfam, South Pacific Electrics, students from Lelepa school, Staff of Wan Smolbag as well as community members from around the area.
After the official presentation guests were treated to a delicious healthy meal prepared by WSB youth at their infamous nutrition centre. As they ate Mamas from Pango and Ifera competed in a friendly cricket game, kindly organized by Cricket Vanuatu’s Island Cricket Program.
The day was a fantastic success and as youth of all ages poured onto the field to play soccer and hockey it was evident that the new field will be used to its full potential for a long time to come.
Wan Smolbag and the Vanuatu Hockey Federation would like to thank all major sponsors and supporters, especially AusAid and Oxfam for their phenomenal contribution to this project.
Wan Smolbag invites anyone and everyone – school classes, work teams, girls and boys to come down and make the most of all the fantastic opportunities available at the sports field. Hope to see you down there soon!
