Local MPs Support Elite Youth Hockey Exchange
Support from local MPs have given two young athletes the opportunity extend their skills and compete at an elite level in an Australian Hockey Club.
After fantastic success at the Junior World Cup Qualifiers in Gold Coast this past March, an Australian Hockey club invited two Ni Vanuatu players to join their team in a top level league for three months.
Two players, Hiro Namu of Wansmolbag Youth Centre and Morris Aromalo of Tanoliu, North Efate were identified by the Vanuatu Hockey Federation(VHF) as dedicated athletes with great future potential both as players and coaches. The boys were selected to travel to Queensland, Australia to represent Casuarina Hockey Club in the Harcourts Hockey Premier League, beginning this July.
On Thursday night, a presentation and ceremony was held in Tanoliu, North Eftae for MP Gillion William and MP Ralph Regenvanu to thank them for their generous contribution towards the boys campaign.
“The two ministers have been fantastic supporters of grassroots and development hockey programs around Port Vila and North Efate” comments VHF President George Kalkaua. “Their contributions and support have provided youth in Efate with a number of pathways to represent their region and even their country.”
Tanoliu village was buzzing with excitement before the ceremony, with a great amount of preparation and care put towards the event. “We are truly appreciative of the support the ministers have given to the youth of Tanoliu. Hockey has provided a great deal of opportunities to our community, and we are proud to see Morris represent our village in Australia” notes captain of Tanoliu Hockey Club, William Kalau in his speech to the large congregation.
The two ministers contributed the flight of Aromalo, and came up north out of office hours to show their support for the boys.
The athletes leave for Australia on Monday 24th June. The VHF would like to wish them the best of luck, and hope they come back with a wealth of experience and new skills.
