Red hot finals Seris!

The Wan Smol Bag, Vanuatu Hockey league finals were wrapped up on Friday night with some hotly contested matches in all divisions.

In under 15s division the Peter Robinson coached WSB Flying Foxes, came out on top beating the Tanilou team Mauta with a thrilling last minute goal to seal the win 4-3. 2 quick goals from Flying Foxes captain Liki Wilkingson in the opening minute got them off to a strong start, from there it was a close affair with the score line of 2-1 at half time. Mauta came out firing after an inspiring half time address by coaches Morris & William, leveling the score and creating many opportunities in the process. The game was set for over time until the last minute play from Flying Foxes netting them the winner. Well done to both teams for a great display sportsmanship, skill and fair play.

WSB Women’s League was forced into golden goal extra time, then finishing in penalty strokes, in an action packed final. The crowed were very vocal in shouting encouragement for both Team Aiu & Tanilou 1. Scores were level at 1-1 after full time as it was an arm wrestle for control for most of the match. It was the first time for all athletes to be involved in such a high stress penalty shoots out with Tanilou slotting the only goal to take the win. ‘’We’re very excited to see such a huge improvement in all the girls skill, such an exciting way to finish the first ever woman’s league final’’ National woman’s coach Jenny Bowtell.

Then Men’s final topped off an impressive final series with special guests from Just Hockey (Australia & NZ biggest Hockey Equipment retailer & distribution company) flying in for the event and to arrange a partnership with Vanuatu Hockey Federation. The fast, frantic pace impressed all spectators with the silky skills and agility of Hiro, Nalpinie, Ben & Danny not going unnoticed. The score was locked at 3-3 with only 20 seconds remaining Nalpinie eliminated 2 players and slotted an outstanding back stick tomahawk, securing the win for MCI eagles. Just Hockey CEO Lance Forkgen was blown away by the talent on show “any of these boys would be able to star in our national competition (AHL), the Ni Van boys are incredibly fast, skill full and have huge amounts of natural ability’’. For the MMF Sharks it was a very disappointing result as they were tipped to take the major prize, Captain John Iawila expressed his disappointment ‘’we really tried hard today but were beating by an amazing piece of skill, we’ll be back next season to try and claim the title’’.

On the back of the impressive finals VHF was able to secure a long term sponsorship with Just Hockey. National Coach Peter Robinson ‘’we are delighted to have such a strong company supporting grass roots hockey and our elite athletes, new hockey equipment is now affordable for all players’’.
