Melbourne club TEM Hockey get collecting for Vanuatu
This year the Toorak East Malvern Hockey club, of Melbourne Australia have reached out to support Vanuatu Hockey, donating over 200kg of hockey equipment.
The club looked to all players to support and work together for the cause, cleaning out their closets, wardrobes and garages of their unused sticks, uniforms and shoes.
In total the club was able to collect over 150 sticks in good condition, numerous uniform sets, 70 pairs of good socks, 10 pairs of shoes, excellent goalie equipment as well as over $200 to help assist in freight costs.
For Vanuatu hockey, who depend on donations of equipment, this has been an absolutely fantastic result. The Vanuatu Hockey Federation(VHF) is looking to start Vanuatu’s first ever hockey League at the end of the month. The donation of uniforms will ensure all teams look the part, and will hopefully encourage all teams to pay their fees on time.
All sticks and shoes will be dispersed throughout the regional hockey development program in Vanuatu, including to new island projects in Tanna and Santo Island.
“After returning from the Junior World Cup Qualifiers with a bronze medal hockey has absolutely exploded in Vanuatu. There is a huge new demand, with lots of new kids and youth keen to get involved. The only thing holding us back from expanding is equipment – so help from clubs like TEMs is what keeps us going” comments VHF President George Kalkaua.
The VHF would like to say a huge thank you to TEM hockey club, especially Craig Seccull and John Mowatt, who have driven the campaign. It will be great to see all the old equipment dusted off and given a new lease of life!
