2012 Oceania Pacific Cup News - Glorious Girls

Games against Papua New Guniea and Samoa proved that the team had the talent and speed to be competitive. As their understanding of full field hockey developed, the girls were able to demonstrate good team play, impressing other teams as well as representatives of the Oceania Hockey Federation.

Tough matches against Australia Country and New Zealand Maori put pressure on the girls physical strength and ability to recover. “These girls have never played at such an intense standard for such an extended period of time. Back to back games each day has really forced the girls to push through physical barriers and injuries to continue playing – it has truly been a testament to their dedication and commitment to their team” comments Women´s team manager Relvie Poilapa.

With an unlucky loss to PNG, the girls faced Samoa in the bronze medal play off on Friday 15th December. The team was outstanding, putting it to the Samoan girls who had been together for almost five years now.

The improvements they had made from the beginning of the tournament were enormous, coming out of the first half just 1-0 down thanks to remarkable effort by goalie Roylanie Apia and impenetrable defenders Helen Kalo and Nenneth Sakita. In the second half, the team came out for the win. Fantastic team play finished off with the skill of striker Iso Poilapa brought the score to 1-1 bringing everyone to the edge of their seats.

The game went to extra time, and Vanuatu looked the stronger team with Samoa tired and slow. However an unlucky defence error resulted in a goal for Samoa at the end of extra time, sealing the win for the Samoan girls.

Although the girls were disappointed, the skill, speed and dedication the girls displayed, along with the huge improvement they had made in just one week proved to everyone that Vanuatu Girls will be back next year – ready to compete for the gold.
