Smol Bag X-Boys

The Wan Smol Bag X-Boys have taken out the first Vanuatu Super Sixes Youth Hockey Tournament in a tight, hard fought final against the Malapoa Mazon at the Wan Smol Bag Sports Senta on Saurday afternoon. In a thrilling conclusion to the days competition the Wan Smol Bag X-Boys slotted through two goals in quick succession, including the winning shot with just moments to spare to finish with a gritty 16 – 10 win over the Malapoa Mazon.

In what was for many their first experience of hockey in a competitive environment, the tournament was hailed a great success, with a four team knockout phase leading to the exciting finale between the tournaments highest scoring teams the Wan Smol Bag X- boys and the Malapoa Mazon.

The team from Malapoa showed how the sport of hockey in Vanuatu has grown in recent years, fielding a highly competitive team made up of youth who have been involved in the weekly hockey clinics held by the VHF at Malapoa College.

After working their way through the knockout rounds against a combined Malapoa/Wan Smol Bag team and Real Seaside, Malapoa Mazon and the X-Boys topped the scoring table with 44 and 39 points respectively. In the deciding game, the Malapoa Mazon were able to hold their own in the final against a team that included a number of players who have represented Vanuatu at the regional Suva Sixes Tournament in Fiji.

The VHF would like to thank everyone who helped make the Vanuatu Super Sixes Youth Hockey Tournament a great day for all involved, in particular the Wan Smol Bag Yut Senta and remind any interested persons of the VHF regular training sessions on Tuesday 4-6pm and Wednesday 3-5pm.
