First Ever Gold for Vanuatu Hockey

It's been a fantastic achievement for Hockey in Vanuatu, with the Men's team winning Gold at the 2017 Oceania Cup in Sydney last week. The boys, led by captain Hiro Namu were outstanding every time they entered the pitch dominating with speed, strength and skill.

The results showed the squads dedication and commitment to training has payed off, as Vanuatu proved to be a level above amongst the countries in the Pacific region.

Vanuatu 17. Tonga 0.

Vanuatu 14. Samoa 1.

Vanuatu 8. Solomon Islands 1.

Grandfinal Vanuatu 11. Samoa 1.

Total: 50 Goals for and 3 against.

Key players of the tournament was Goal Keeper Michel John, only letting in 3 goals over the week! Major goal scorers Morris Aramolo and Ben Sam often finding the back of the net with some superb finishing. And key defender (captain) Hiro Namu was able to manipulate opposition teams with quick ball speed, communication and was super reliable with strong tackling.

We had amazing support at the Moorebank Liverpool H.C. who were able to provide accomodation, food and transport in Sydney, making the trip affordable. We wold like to tank them and our ongoing supporters in Vanuatu.

With recent results the Vanuatu Hockey Federation hope to build momentum and gain major sponsorship to compete in the Youth Olympic Qualifiers in PNG, April, 2018. There is a huge potential both our U18 Boys and Girls Teams could qualify and have an opportunity to compete in the Youth Olympic Games in Argentina, August, 2018. 2 to 3 teams will qualify for the major event, and recent news has been leaked that New Zealand will not send teams to the qualifying round, meaning teams of the Pacific have a massive opportunity. If we can secure major funding, then our coaching staff can focus on the teams preparation.

The hockey season will conclude in Vanuatu in late November with closing tournaments for Pikinini, Mummas, U18's and Senior Mens and Womens. Keep up to date with our training and competition schedule by the Wan Smol Bag sports office, or our Facebook site.
