Tigers Maul Smashers in Mangoes Indy Cup

It was hot. It was sweaty. It was fast. It was furious. It was Vanuatu Hockey at its electrifying best. Not unlike the boxing exhibition at Tagabe Bridge later that evening there was some razzle-dazzle footwork and flashy skills on show at Wan Smolbag Sports Court as perfect weather on Sunday ensured the inaugural Mangoes Resort Hockey Independence Cup was a roaring success.

With three teams from the Wan Smolbag Hockey Club and three teams from the newly formed Outsidaz Hockey Club taking a shot at the title it was a hotly contested six-a-side competition and some close matches throughout. As the first official hockey competition in Vanuatu, the Mangoes Indy Cup is an exciting new development for this growing sport and hopes to be bigger and better next year.
The match of the day was the last pool fixture between the Tigers and the Bobcats which required golden goal extra-time to separate the
two as horns were locked 3 - 3 at the bell. It took a lovely piece of teamwork for the Tigers to deliver the knockout blow and hence proceed to the title fight. By now the Tigers had tasted blood and were ready to pounce on a suffering Smashers outfit who slowly succumbed to the trophy-hungry Tigers 4 -1.

There is some serious talent in the fledgling Outsidaz club. With all members only taking up hockey less than a month ago and all of their matches being close encounters, their performances are to be commended. They will be a force to be reckoned with in the not-too-distant future. Job and Makensi, the two WSB goal keepers, defended their lines' admirably and deserve a special mention.
The organizers would like to thank Mangoes Resort, Wan Smolbag Nutrition Senta and Peter Walker for their support.
