Junior Outreach Program

OUTREACH REPORT – January to April

The VHF has re-commenced its hockey outreach program for the year and is continuing its previous hard work to promote the sport around Port Vila as well as to the East and North of Efate.

The target schools this year have been Vila Not, Victory School of Hope (Blacksands), Eton, Epau, Ekipe, Mangalaliu, Lelepa, Moso and Tanoliu. With attendance totaling 1250 pikinini since January. The break down can be seen below. Please note January was a quite month as students were still on holidays so since Feb we have averaged around 400 a month. The target age for this period has been from class 2-4.

With the aim of progressing hockey in these areas we have given out over 200 sticks to these schools to keep in their sports departments to allow them to play even when the outreach team is unable to make it to their individual schools (we average a visit to each schools once every 3 weeks). Additionally and more importantly we will be running a coaching course this month for anyone interested - not only from the schools but looking to include people from the communities with a push to include as many women as possible.

The outreach program is not only aimed at the schools with development officer and women in sport activist Mary Siro progressing with plans to include all the Mama’s of the communities in the East and North. A great initiative to promote healthy lifestyles and exercise. A nutrition and sports day is being planned for the near future as well.

The National team volunteers their time to coach every Wednesday for the afternoon on school sports day, making the trip to East Efate and North Efate on alternate weeks. This is a fantastic experience for the pikinini having such skilled players come down to help coach and inspire them.

We were also lucky to have a group of players from Monash University visit to play some games against the National team but also got involved in the Outreach program. They said the arfternoon they spent at Tanoliu Primary school was the highlight of their trip!

Our plans for the next period are to add in tournaments for the schools once they have reached a sufficient basic understanding of the game.
