YOUTH OLYMPIC QUALIFIERS COMING TO VANUATU!!!!!!!
For the first time in Vanuatu history, Port Vila is to be the host of an Official Olympic event.
The Vanuatu Hockey Federation (VHF) is excited to announce its success in their recent bid to host the Youth Olympic Oceania Qualifiers in Port Vila, March 2014.
The Oceania region tournament, which is one of only six qualifiers to be held around the world, is the lead up event to the Youth Olympics in Nanjing China 2014. The qualifier will see nations including Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Papua New Guinea and Samoa travel to Port Vila to compete for a spot in the biggest junior sporting event worldwide.
“This is the biggest thing to happen to Vanuatu Sport for a long time” says VASANOC CEO Henry Tarosa. “The games will allow us to show off our country as a proud sporting nation with world class sporting facilities.”
The event will be held at the recently renovated and extended National Hockey Pitch, located as Wan Smolbag Youth Centre. This pitch has been 5 months in the making and was the fundamental reason that Vanuatu could bid to host the tournament. The VHF is very excited to see all the hard work paid off, and believe this event to be just the first of many amazing opportunities presented by the new pitch.
The VHF and Wan Smolbag have already begun work for the tournament which will be held in early March 2014. The Ud. 18 Hockey5 tournament is expected to bring big crowds to Vila to watch the games, including many athletes families and friends. Facilities around the field will be upgraded to ensure the event is of an international standard. The improvement of facilities will be durable and long term, benefiting the Youth Centre and assisting in the preparation of the Mini Pacific Games to be held in Port Vila in 2017.
Hockey5 is the newest adaption of Hockey recently implemented by the International Hockey Federation (FIH). Instead of the traditional 11 players on the field there are only 5, making the game faster and more exciting whilst also making it more viable for smaller countries to send teams overseas. Hockey5 will be played at the Qualifier and the Youth Olympics in China, as well as the Pacific Games in Papua New Guinea in 2015.
“The success in our bid for this tournament demonstrates how far hockey has come here in Vanuatu” says VHF President George Kalkaua. “This will not only be a great opportunity for the sport but will also raise awareness of hockey as one of the biggest up and coming sports in this country and the Pacific in general. It will bring some of the worlds most talented youth together, providing a great inspiration to our young and upcoming generations.”
The VHF Wansmolbag Official field opening is to be held next Wednesday, with all generous supporters and sponsors to attend the official cutting of the ribbon. There has been such great support for this sporting initiative, and the VHF would like to specially thank Oxfam, AusAid, The International Hockey Federation, Oceania National Olympic Committee, The Ministry of Youth and Sport, Customs and Inland Revenue, Minister of Lands the Hon Ralph Regenvanu, VASANOC, Oceania Hockey, trailblazer Peter Robinson and especially Wan Smolbag Youth Centre for their amazing support and efforts into making this a reality.
