Hiro + Morris Swing into Casuarina HC
After fantastic success at the Junior World Cup Qualifiers in Gold Coast this past March, an Australian Hockey club has invited two Ni Vanuatu players to join their team in a top level league for three months.
Two players, Hiro Namu of Wansmolbag Youth Centre and Morris Aromalo of Tanoliu, North Efate were identified by the Vanuatu Hockey Federation(VHF) as dedicated athletes with great future potential both as players and coaches. The boys were selected to travel to Queensland, Australia to represent Casuarina Hockey Club in the Harcourts Hockey Premier League.
Namu and Aromalo competed in their first game for Casuarina on the weekend, drawing with competition leaders 3-3. They have also been given a sponsorship deal with leading hockey retailer Just Hockey, who identify talented athletes and support them with free equipment including shoes and sticks.
Whilst in Australia, Namu and Aromalo have also been invited to train with Queensland State representative teams and the Queensland Academy of Sport, training with current Australian Olympians and International players.
The boys will be fully supported by the club, with visas, accommodation and live in expenses fully covered. Their host family has a great deal of sporting talent, with their host father representing Australia in the Olympics and host sister recently selected in the U.21 Australian National Hockey team.
It is expected that all the skills and knowledge gained in Australia will be brought back with the boys and will translate into further development for the sport in Vanuatu.
The VHF would like to thank Minster of Lands Ralph Regenvanu, Mp Gillion William and National Bank Vanuatu as well as Casuarina Hockey Club and Just Hockey Australia for their support in sending the athletes across to Australia.
